Trouble with Assassins
I've just started an Assassin, currently level 9, and I'm having a hard time staying alive.
Getting up there is fine, I have Death's Charge for that. But coming back?
That's harder.
At the moment, I get up, unleash one combo, then promptly die. I generally manage to, if not kill, then at least seriously maim my target, but then my job gets harder and harder because of death penalty.
How do people actually stay alive with their assassins?

Well bud, I don't mean to grief ya, but this is posted all over the assassin forums. Anywho, buy recall or return(i like recall) and thatll get you back. Critical defenses is also nice but I didn't use that until I was lvl 20 sadly .

Ealry on its harder because of lack of shadow stepping skills, but hang in there. warping skills get more abundant later on. Another thing you have to consider, if you aggro the mobs first before henchies or rest of your group , all the damage is focused on you. You have to let the tanks get the aggro, then you skirt the edges looking for targets of oppourtunity.

yeah, I'm slowly starting to realise that assassins are better off following alongside the backline (casters/rangers). You're more effective in groups, when there are threats that are attacking your casters, or the threat is isolated, that is where you come in^^

Assassins just have to be more selective of targets, squishies and half dead warriors are your targets. I try to stick to the casters for targets, hang back pick an unsuspecting target and nail em! An finely tuned assassin attack string can take out most caster class, if not cause enough disruption that the loose focous on your group or their own in the case of a healer.

I found my early assasin days quite easy due to some super simple keystrokes::
CONTROL + SHIFT + SPACE (the same as Cntrl + Space, except you do not run to the target, you stay at your location)
When a target is selected, this calls your target without you yourself having to actually move to the target, which after about 1 sec your warrior henchy will rush towards that target taking the aggro focus. You are then free to rush in and kill any target you wish with much less risk of dying. I find that this works best when you place the mob/target right outside your aggro bubble and do NOT aggro as you use the above keystrokes.
Try this out, i can guarantee you will find life quite a bit easier as an assasin. Also, make sure to always have at least 2 skills for self heal and/or defense. An overlooked skill i used a lot in my early assasin days was Heart of Shadow. It can really save you in a pinch when you need those few seconds to let your healer henchy actually heal you. This skill randomly teleports you (usually OUT of the mob, not 100% though) and the next hit that you recieve you are healed for a small amount. The teleport + small heal buys you a few seconds which is usually all you need.
Enjoy.

Isn't Viper's Defense also a fairly useful skill to use? Randon teleport+the person who attacked you is poisoned.

well if your using deaths charge to get in, your sort of wasteing the skill. It gives you health when you need it, so use that when your low on health, not right before you lose any!

I've found that Shadow Stepping is for finishing off fleeing/wounded targets. When you see an enemy withdraw it's your turn to shine. Until then you're probably just assisting allied tanks.
Here is the Zen mindset you need to be in:
Imagine yourself as a Jackal. You're not there to attack and bring down big strong prey. You're there to find the weak/sick and cull them from the herd.
